01
Xu (shoo)
嘘
- Pursed lips as if whistling, cheeks drawn in and the tongue held low.
- Arms rise slowly to about shoulder height, palms down, index fingers extended; lower them as the sound finishes.
02
He (huh)
呵
- The jaw drops open, unhurried, more like a sigh than a syllable.
- Hands press downward in front of the chest and lower abdomen, then lift again as you breathe in.
03
Hu (who)
呼
- Lips rounded, with strong continuous airflow behind them.
- Hands sweep outward and upward at waist level, palms turning as they rise.
04
Si (see)
呬
- A wide mouth with the upper teeth showing and the tongue close to the teeth. This is the only sound of the six that begins with an s.
- Index fingers raised beside the cheeks, then lowered in front of the chest.
05
Chui (ch-way)
吹
- A small round opening, as if blowing out a candle at a distance.
- Hands cup lightly beside the cheeks, then lower to chest height.
06
Xi (shee)
嘻
- Lips stretched sideways into a broad grin, teeth visible, the sound riding on the smile.
- Hands lift beside the ears, then lower slowly in front of the body.
