Mingmen (命门), meaning “Gate of Life,” is the acupoint GV-4 located on the lower back, between the second and third lumbar vertebrae (L2-L3), directly opposite the lower Dan Tian. In Chinese medicine it is the point where the body’s foundational Yang qi resides.
Role in Tai Chi
Mingmen is the lumbar hinge of the Tai Chi body. When the lower back is relaxed and slightly rounded (含胸拔背, containing the chest and extending the back), Mingmen opens — the lumbar vertebrae separate and the sacrum settles, creating the structural connection between the legs’ rooting and the torso’s release.
This action is central to:
- Connecting rooting (扎根) to upper-body power
- The “opening the kua” (开胯) hip crease release
- Whole-body unified power (整劲) generation from the ground up
- Avoiding a locked or collapsed lower back
In Chen-style practice, Mingmen opening is the anatomical basis of silk reeling (缠丝劲) — the waist rotation originates from this lumbar hinge.
